Kampong Buangkok
Built in 1956, Kampong Buangkok is the last surviving kampong (village) in the main island of Singapore.
The land is owned by the family of a Mr Sng Teow Koon. He set up home in the kampong with his family and rented out land to people to build homes. The land was handed down to his children, one of whom is Ms Sng Mui Hong. She continues to live there with her nieces. Her 3 other siblings, who are the co-owners, have all moved out.
The tenants pay only about S$30 rent per month. In 2007, the kampong made news as developers had offered S$33 million for it, but the family refused to sell ... (Source: Wiki and Remember Singapore). In an interview recently, Ms Sng said "Money no important; I 'sayang' my kampong" (I love my village).)
And so Singapore's last 'kampong' escapes urbanisation ... at least for a while more ...
